Texas Hunting Seasons for Zapata County

SPECIAL NOTES

  • WHITE-TAILED DEER: On properties where Level 2 or Level 3 MLD permits have been issued, a MLD permit is required to hunt any white-tailed deer. On Level 1 MLD properties, a MLD permit is required ONLY for antlerless deer.
  • On properties for which MLD permits have been issued. all deer harvested during any open season must be tagged with an appropriate completed MLD tag furnished by the landowner.

White-tailed Deer

  • Archery Only: September 27-October 31, 2008. No permit required to hunt antlerless deer unless MLD permits have been issued for the property.
  • General Season: November 1, 2008-January 18, 2009. Special Late General Season: January 19-February 1, 2009 (antlerless and spike bucks only). Bag limit: 5 deer, no more than 3 bucks, all seasons combined.
  • Special Youth-Only Season: Early open season: October 25-26, 2008. Late open season: January 17-18, 2009.

Bag limits, provision for the take of antlerless deer, and special requirements of the county, shall be as specified for the first 2 days of the general open season.
Licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger may hunt deer by any lawful means during this season.

  • Javelina:
    • No closed season. Bag limit: 2 per license year.
  • Squirrel:
    • No closed season. No bag limit.
  • Turkey
    • The annual bag limit for Rio Grande and Eastern turkey, in the aggregate for all counties, is four (4), no more than one of which may be an Eastern turkey. For counties that have an Eastern Turkey spring season, there is no fall season.

Fall:

Open season: November 1, 2008-January 18, 2009 Bag limit: 4 turkeys, gobblers or bearded hens.
Archery Only: September 27-October 31, 2008.

Spring:

Rio Grande turkey: Open season: March 21-May 3, 2009 (gobblers only).
Special Youth-Only (Rio Grande turkey): Open season: March 14-15 and May 9-10, 2009.
Quail:
Statewide: Open season: October 25, 2008-February 22, 2009. Daily bag limit: 15 Possession limit: 45
Dove:
Dove Hunting Zones in Texas
Special white-winged dove area
That portion of the state south and west of a line beginning at the International Toll Bridge in Del Rio; thence northeast along U.S. Highway 277 Spur to U.S. Highway 90 in Del Rio, thence east along U.S. Highway 90 to State Loop 1604; thence south and east along Loop 1604 to Interstate Highway 35; thence south along IH 35 to State Highway 44; thence east along State Highway 44 to State Highway 16 at Freer; thence south along State Highway 16 to State Highway 285 at Hebbronville; thence east along State Highway 285 to FM 1017 to State Highway 186 at Linn; thence east along State Highway 186 to the Mansfield Channel at Port Mansfield; thence east along the Mansfield Channel to the Gulf of Mexico.

Special White-winged Dove Area Note: The dates are distinct from the rest of the South Zone

*In all zones, the daily bag limit can include no more than 2 white-tipped (white-fronted doves). The possession limit on white-tipped doves is twice the daily bag limit.
**Bag limits for the Special White-winged Dove Area: 12 white-winged, mourning and white-tipped doves in the aggregate, to include no more than 4 mourning doves and 2 white-tipped (white-fronted doves). Possession limit is twice the daily bag limit.
